While total points scored is the most visible metric, it doesn't tell the whole story. A kicker's value depends on accuracy across different ranges, consistency under pressure, and ability to convert long-distance attempts when games are on the line.
Key Findings
- Elite kickers are nearly perfect at short range: Top performers like Ka'imi Fairbairn and Will Reichard converted 100% of attempts under 40 yards, while mid-tier kickers showed noticeable drop-offs even in this "automatic" range.
- Long-range ability creates strategic advantages: Kickers like Brandon Aubrey and Will Reichard attempt significantly more 50+ yard field goals, giving their teams scoring options that other teams don't have in late-game situations.
- Volume doesn't always equal ranking: Nick Folk posted the highest accuracy (96.6%) but ranked 11th due to fewer attempts, while Ka'imi Fairbairn combined both high volume (48 attempts) and high accuracy (91.7%) to lead the league.
- Inconsistency compounds over a season: Small differences in accuracy (78.4% vs 91.7%) translate to multiple missed scoring opportunities that can impact playoff positioning.
